CREW is a company that specialises in learning workshops for school children. Drawing upon the KS1 and KS2 curriculums used in UK schools, we have put together a range of different workshops and presentations covering a variety of relevant topics. We deliver these workshops by way of interactive learning, using fun props, silly wigs and kid-friendly costumes (and maybe just a touch of overacting from our very dedicated performers). CREW operates across the southeast of England in schools, museums, and play centres, and offers learning experiences that cater to many different ability levels.

Engaging Kids for Better Learning

So what sets us apart from other similar primary school programmes? Well for a start, we have an incredibly strong ethos at the heart of our business, which is reflected in our two mottos: “Laugh, Listen, Learn” and “Every child has a role to play”. As teacher Tim Taylor writes in the Guardian, play has been proven to be hugely beneficial when it comes to helping children learn. In Taylor’s experience, “children learn best when they are engaged in their learning” and for primary school students, engagement isn’t always easy when you’re using a traditional lesson format. In Taylor’s opinion, engagement with school children happens when the classroom resembles “a functioning workplace with people operating together as a team”.

Participation for Everyone

Part of what drives our workshops is the fact that there are always going to be children who find it hard to connect academically to the work they’re assigned. We believe that interactive, playful, cooperative learning through our workshops is one way to bolster a child’s confidence, and spark off new systems of learning that were previously inaccessible to them. In our workshops, no child is left behind; because we believe every child has a role to play, everyone in the class is given the opportunity to participate – whether they’re donning a crown to play Henry VIII, acting out the movement of an electron, or learning how to plunder like a Viking! This kind of experience helps all kids, no matter what their ability level, to get their head around tricky subject matters – and it’s also a great opportunity for them to relax, get a bit silly, and potentially even make some new friends.

Workshop Topics that Kids Will Love

The topics we cover in our workshops are wide-ranging, and are designed both to complement what the children are learning in the classroom, and expand upon their knowledge, opening up new avenues of enquiry. Our lively, costume-filled History workshops cover topics such as the Great Fire of London, the Egyptians, the Tudors, the World Wars and Black History. Science, meanwhile, tackles areas such as forces, sound, materials and electricity – a workshop that Winns Primary School deputy headteacher Andy Renwick describes in this video as a very worthwhile experience that the children “absolutely loved”.

We also offer workshops in Literacy & Drama, Numeracy, and Geography, as well as specialised programmes designed to build social skills, and help with the transition from primary school to secondary school.
