Victorian House: Homes in the past

Scullery maidA great day was had at Vaughan Primary school last week with year 1 as they discovered what life was like in a Victorian house.  The children got to grips with understanding the day to day jobs and tasks that have to be done in order to keep a Victorian home clean and tidy. It always surprises children how much they have to do,  as they discover how to light a fire not just for warmth…”Where’s the light switch?” we hear them cry, clean the floors “…and the vacuum cleaner?” Even going to the bathroom is a chore!  The history of a Victorian house is also the history of how roles, jobs and society have changed and how these changes have impacted on our lives.

Brilliant workshop!  The children loved every minute of it and were able to discuss what they had learned during the workshop.  It was good to see all children get a go in the performance.  Vaughan Primary
