Victorian House – This Old House

KS1 curriculum – Homes: What were homes like a long time ago?
Also available for KS2.

Meet Mr Carstairs, the Victorian Butler or Lizzie, The Laundry Maid!

Sugars need pounding!
Clothes need washing!
Floors need scrubbing!
And carpets need beating!

What happens in the workshop?

Our Victorian servant will visit your school and take your children back to a time when there wasn’t a washing machine, electricity or inside toilets.  Where work has to be done by hand (their hands), to compare their homes and lives with those of children a long time ago.

Using artefacts and costumes your children will become the hard working servants who scrubbed floors, beat carpets and performed all the duties of keeping a house and it’s owners clean.

All CREW© workshops have 30-40 interactive opportunities for volunteers. So, we really mean…… Every child has a role to play!

Did you know?

  1. Queen Victorian ruled for 63 years from June 20th 1837 to 22nd January 1901.
  2. Street vendors of the Victorian age sold some unusual foods. One popular delicacy was sheep’s feet, which were sold hot or cold. They were called trotters, and could be purchased at a low price from slaughterhouses, so vendors would buy them and prepare them at home by skinning and parboiling them, before selling them to workers in the street. Customers would then suck the meat and fat off the bones…Umm yum!
  3. Tattoos are not a modern-day phenomenon; they have always been around.  The Victorians however grew a fascination with them after it was reported that Queen Victoria’s son the Prince of Wales after seeing someone in Jerusalem have a tattoo, decided to have one.  So, underneath those stern pictures of Victorian men and women lies a flourishing imagination.

An endorsement for Victorian House – This Old House KS1 Primary School Workshop:

“The children really enjoyed joining in. We found it particularly good that there were enough costumes and props for all the children to have a role.”
